Save Your Money: Common Baby Junk New Mom’s DON’T Need

Don't waste yoru money on anay stuff you dont need. HAve a baby on a budget! cheap, frugal, free, save money, ways to save money. As I write this post, I have less than 4 weeks until baby Caleb is due. Praise the Lord! This third pregnancy has worn me slap out. We are still getting his nursery together and pulling out all of the stored away baby item we will need.

But, I want to take a second and speak out against all the stuff that the media makes a Mama think she needs for her baby. We are bombarded with “baby essentials” that they are trying to convince us that we NEED. Most of it, we really don’t need at all. Most of it is a waste of money and a waste of space.

You do not have to spend a lot of money or have a lot of baby junk to produce happy, healthy children! Some of the junk they claim we need is just ridiculous! You can very easily have a baby on a budget by saying “NO!” to a lot of the baby stuff they push at us!

Now, I don’t claim to be an expert on what is and isn’t needed for a new baby, especially since each family and each baby is different. But, after three times I think I have a thing or two to say about it. 😉 Let me just tell you that some things (for us) were a complete waste of money. I am frugal and love to save money, but not at the expense of my children. If we need it, they’ll have it! But some of it is just ridiculous.

The following baby accessories are just not necessary, y’all! Frankly, they are a waste of money.HAving a baby on a budget? Save monwy by skipping these 14 things.

Bottle Warmer

I have never used one for my kiddos. I have had friends who use them and love them, but I just never got my children in the habit of needing a warm bottle. If you mix formula, just use room temperature water from the beginning and they won’t know the difference. If you breastfeed and use pumped milk in a bottle, just make sure you pull it out of the fridge or freezer in time to allow it to return to room temperature by the time your baby needs it. According to, breast milk can safely stay at room temperature for 3-4 hours.

Wipes Warmer

This is also a product I have never used. They are not necessary and will only take up space, which is a commodity at our house. Plus, I have friends who have said that the warmers dry their wipes out.

Crib Bumpers

Okay,  this one might be controversial, as much as baby paraphernalia can be controversial. 😉 I have always had crib bumpers, but I cringe at the price tag on those things. I cringe even more when I realize that I never keep them on the bed for very long. The moment my babies start moving at all, I remove the crib bumpers because I am scared of strangulation.

So, if you are on a budget, feel free to skip these costly things! Or try a much cheaper, and safer, mesh crib liner.

Video Monitor

These are cool, and I had one with my first born. I stared at it all the time, to be quite honest. But, with my second baby, I never even used it! So, you can very easily get by with a normal monitor, or without one at all.

The regular ones are quite affordable, compared to the camera monitors.

Baby “Keurig”

Y’all, who needs a machine to mix formula? I mean, for real! I can scoop my own formula, pour my own water and shake my own bottle. It’s not an inconvenience. There is no need to drop $150 or more on a Keurig-type counter top appliance for mixing formula. Not to mention the cost of the formula pods you have to buy to go in the thing! They can cost over $1 per pod.

This just seems completely ridiculous to me! But, I have never tried one, either. Maybe you have one and love it, but for me, I would rather save the money.

In case you have no idea what this crazy baby item looks like, here ya go…

Baby Bath Tub

This is another one of those items I had for my first baby that I never even touched on my second. Baby bath tubs just take up space, y’all! I ended up bathing my second baby in the sink with one of these awesome Blooming Bath flowers. I didn’t spend my money on it, it was a gift, but an item I think would be worth your money. Its really easy to use and once it’s dried it doesn’t take up much space. (Taking up little space is a big deal for me!)

Nursing Cover

I know, you see adorable nursing covers on Pinterest all the time and you are thinking that you could really use another adorable accessory in your life, but don’t waste your money. Your diaper bag will be over flowing with stuff; burp clothes, blankets, “lovies”, etc. Any one of those items can be used to preserve your modesty if you are out in public and need to feed your baby. You do not have to spend money on a piece of fabric designated for this purpose.

Name Brand Formula

Did you know that all baby formula has to meet the same FDA guidelines to be approved for sale in the USA? Therefor, it’s okay to opt for the value brand instead of the popular name brand formulas. You can save a lot of money by skipping the popular brands!

High Chair Cover/Cart Cover

I see people using these all the time, but I never remembered to take mine into the restaurant or store with me. By the time I got inside and realized it was still in the car, I was over it. It wasn’t worth going back! All you need is some antibacterial wipes to wipe the surfaces down with and you are good to go.

Car Seat Canopy

If you are having a Winter baby, ignore me on this one. You should have one to keep that little one warm, but if you are having a Spring or Summer baby, you don’t need it. I had one for my second baby, an April baby, and it basically just made him hot. I never used it. Even the car seat liner that came with the set was really a waste of my money too, because I always worried that the soft, fuzzy fabric was making him hot.

I know they are cute, but you can totally skip the Car Seat Canopy sets and save yourself some money!

Bottle Sterilizer

I had a bottle sterilizer and used it once or twice. Then, I realized my dishwasher was totally capable of handling the job. That bulky thing was taking up space and was really just inconvenient because running my bottles through it was an extra step when I could so easily just run them in the dishwasher with my other dishes. Or, boil them!

I recommend that you skip the Bottle Sterilizer and save money to spend on other more necessary things.

UV Pacifier Sterilizer

I know, ridiculous right? It exists though, I promise! See…

But, honestly, who needs this!? Will you take time to pull it out and use it? Will there be room in your diaper bag to take it with you? A sink will do the job. You should run them through the dishwasher regularly anyway. But, if you are really worried about it while you are out and about, just carry paci wipes with you.

Baby Food Processor

Do you own a blender, a Magic Bullet or a Ninja? If so, you already have a baby food processor. You do not need to spend your money on one that is pink or blue or has the work “baby” on it to make you feel like its legit. Your food processor will work just fine.

Most expensive diapers

Lastly, diapers! Now don’t get me wrong, the cheapest brand of diapers you can find are a waste of money too, but so are the most expensive ones. You can easily find a brand with middle-of-the-road prices that will work just as well as some of the ridiculously priced diapers. For instance, Wal-Mart’s Parent’s Choice diapers were a waste of money for me on my first born. He was allergic to them and I had to change his diaper more frequently with them anyway. So, I used more. But, the Luv’s brand were perfect. They are cheaper than the leading brands but worked just as well for us on both boys. You should be willing to try a few brands and see if some of the more economical brands work just as well for you.

There are a lot of other baby items that are a waste of money, but these tend to get my attention the most.

If you are a new Mom on a budget, don’t get bogged down by all of the stuff that Pinterest, commercials and baby magazines are trying to convince you that you need. You can have a happy, healthy baby on a budget. You and your little one won’t miss all that stuff!

On the flip side, some things are worth the money! Check out this post to see what a frugal Mama thinks is well worth the money when it comes to your baby!

  1. Annie says:

My mom was INSISTENT that she buy me a wipe warmer for my first son (a December baby)… it was okay, but overall pretty useless. His younger brother has been getting wipes out of the pack since birth and has survived thus far… weird, huh?

  2. Julie- Logger's Wife says:

I actually really loved my nursing cover. So much easier than a blanket. I ended up formula feeding my second baby and really, really wanted one of the formula maker things. Never got one but really wanted it. 😉

You can thaw a frozen bag of breastmilk quickly by simply put the bag in a bowl of warm water. Bottle warmers only made sense to me in the daycare setting where all the bottles are cold in the fridge. Wipe warmers never, ever made sense to me. #ThriftyThursday
